The Oaks Collection of Letters
Thanks to former Phelps Town Historian Mabel Oaks and her daughter-in-law, Ann Oaks who faithfully kept Mabel's records, we have several boxes of letters dating back to the early 1800s. Volunteers have been transcribing letters:
March 15, 1834 Nathan Oaks to Col. Elias Cost
Mrs Mary Ann Dawkins to Mrs Oaks Geneva January 15th 1879

Dear Friend Josie, Yours of the 30th of Dec. came to hand two or three days ago, and I should have answered it sooner but have a great deal to take up my time. Your room is 11 ft by 10 1/2. It takes three and a half breadths of carpet eleven feet long to cover the floor. Excuse my writing more as I am in a great hurry. Yours very truly (CCBoe) Wm G. Oaks P.S. I think you said that you could get me some foreign postage stamps at your place. I wish you would, if you can. CC |
