Dear Father, I received your letter on Wednesday last stating that you were making sugar and many other things. Please to have some good sugar when I come home because I should like some very much indeed. I wrote to you for a pair of pumps but you have sent me a pair of low shoes which are equally good. I will come home on the 22nd of the present month. We have very wet weather here. The snow fell on Friday night a very little but not enough to make sleighing. Please to tell Lucretia that she must write to me because I have received but one letter from her this term. I should like to receive a letter from Mother but I shall not scold her about it. I have no more to say at the present. Your affectionate son Nathan Oaks Geneva January 15th 1879
Mrs Oaks I am sorry to hear of your troubles – in the first place the loss of your dear Daughter it certainly is a great and severe trial – but is a great comfort to you to know that she has gone to a better world where there is no more sorrow nor Death – when hour Husband and yourself and sons are called to leave this world you may be prepared to go and meet her in the Heavenly Jerusolem where you will never more be separated and all tears will be wiped away by our Blessed Saviour who loved us and gave himself a ransom for us – we are trouble in some way or other in this life but what a blessed thing it is to have a well grounded hope on Jesus Christ as the foundation he is ever faithful and will help us to bear our troubles if we put our trust in him. I am thankful to say I enjoy as good health as most people at my age. I am affected with heart disease sometimes for a day or two – but not often laid aside with it. I must now conclude hoping you will be all well when you received this – from Mary Ann Dawkins |
