PHELPS CROQUET CLUB - THEN AND NOW
The Phelps Croquet Club was started in 1890 by May VanValkenburg with 16 members. Shortly after, 8 new members were added (by invitation to Phelps residents only) and the total stayed at 24 until it was disbanded in 1917 because of WWI. When it was reorganized in 1938 the membership was increased to 28. This allowed 4 hostessees to prepare dinner and still have 24 to play! Six courts were set up for each meeting and 10 games were played; four players on each of the six courts. The ringing of a hand-held school bell starts play. The first player to finish each game also rings the bell. After the game bell is rung, cards of the leaders of the other three games are punched.
Today, the game is played differently but the club lives on!
